The Asashio class destroyers were a class of Imperial Japanese Navy destroyers. They were all built from 1937 to 1939, after Japanese abrogation of the London Naval Treaty of 1930. These ships were meant to take advantage of the Japanese advantages in torpedo firepower, and were designed to screen larger ships and engage in hit and run attacks against enemy vessels. 10 ships of this class were manufactured before the class was superseded by the Akizuki class destroyers. No Japanese ships of the Asashio class survived the war.

The ship's 3 boilers powered 2 geared turbine shafts with a power output of 50000 HP at the screws, giving it a top speed of 35 knots and a range of 5700 nautical miles at 10 knots or 960 nautical miles at 34 knots.
