Fort Ellis

Fort Ellis was an early United States Army outpost established August 27, 1867, to the eastern side of present-day Bozeman, Montana, as settlers moved into the Gallatin Valley.

The post was named for American Civil War Col. Augustus van Horne Ellis, who was killed in action at the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. It was home to five companies of the 2nd Cavalry and Yellowstone explorer Gustavus C. Doane. The post was abandoned by the Army in 1886.
